Sport and Spine Rehab’s Dr. Allen Huffman is one “America’s Most Loved Doctors,” says DrScore.com, a patient satisfaction and physician-rating Web site.
Dr. Huffman, a chiropractor with physical therapy privileges, is the clinic director in Landover, MD, for Sport and Spine Rehab. He was named as one of the top 6 doctors (of 64,000 subscribers) for the 2009 Doctor of the Year award by Winston-Salem, N.C.-based DrScore.com, an interactive online survey Web site where patients rate their physicians, as well as find doctors based on their service level preference.
“I’m very proud for the clinic. This recognition is really a reflection of everyone at Sport and Spine Rehab,” says Dr. Huffman, who sees 35 to 45 patients a day, and 140 to 160 patients a week. “We are unique because of our attitude and our care. Our attitude is that we care. As we interact with our patients, they realize they are not just a number. There is nothing more rewarding than watching them improve.”
Sport and Spine Rehab, which has eight locations throughout the Washington, D.C., area, provides state-of-the-art comprehensive care by combining chiropractic, physical therapy, rehabilitation and patient education to eliminate symptoms, restore full function and promote a healthy lifestyle. Its brand of musculoskeletal rehabilitation, FUNHAB, is geared not only toward eliminating symptoms, but also restoring full function and health to the human body.
DrScore named Craig Robbins, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in Jackson, Miss., this year’s Doctor of the Year. To merit consideration for Doctor of the Year, physicians had to have at least 100 ratings on the DrScore site. Patients rated all the finalists, including Dr. Huffman, as excellent physicians. “Dr. Huffman and the other Doctors of the Year have all worked hard to make sure their patients are happy with the care they provide,” says Dr. Steven Feldman, the founder of DrScore. “Patients who are happy with their physicians are more comfortable going to their doctor when they have a problem. And they are also more likely to follow their doctor’s orders and take the prescribed medications, which leads to better outcomes.”
Dr. Huffman received an overall score of 9.7 out of 10, a near perfect rating. Almost 150 patients rated him on the care he provides, including how much time he spends with them and the quality of care he provides.
“Everybody’s really excited about Allen’s recognition. He’s got great relationships with his patients. He’s a very caring and warm person,” says Jay Greenstein, Sport and Spine Rehab’s CEO. “Allen is a great example of the company’s mission. The time and effort we spend on customer service and process management – that really creates a consistent experience every time a patient comes in.”
Dr. Huffman earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y. He received his chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, N.Y.
In 1980, Dr. Huffman began his career in health care when he joined the U.S. Air Force as a corpsman. The obstetrics unit at Yokota Air Base in Tokyo represented his first assignment. He later transferred into the emergency department and was assigned to the 655th Tactical Hospital as a combat medical specialist. His military service also included assignments in Germany and at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, as a medical instructor.
After leaving the military, Dr. Huffman continued working as an emergency medical technician until entering New York Chiropractic College in 1995.
Dr. Huffman joined Sport and Spine Rehab in 2001. That same year, he served as the team doctor for the Maryland Mustangs, a semi-pro men’s basketball squad. Dr. Huffman currently treats the majority of the Washington Redskins cheerleaders. Sport and Spine Rehab is the cheerleaders’ official chiropractic provider. Born in Takoma Park, MD, Dr. Huffman currently lives in Annapolis, MD. He is married and has a daughter and two young grandchildren.
